By all accounts the Christmas Offensive by
the Ethiopian Military in Somalia has been
such a success that it has suprised several
people.
Recent Airstrikes by US Military Aircraft
against sites that are considered to be Al-Qaida
camps in the South of Somalia have generated
bad press for the United States in Africa.
It must be realized that Ethiopia was
invited to take part in an African Union
Peacekeeping Mission to assist the
struggling Transitional Government in Baidoa.
The Capital of Mogadishu and most of the
south were under the control of an Islamic
Militia that was compared by some people to
the Taleban that ruled Afganistan in the
90s.
Now that the TNG is now in Mogadishu and are
asking for International Peacekeepers to
help restore order. So one question begs to
be asked is will any American Troops assist
in this nation building mission.
Most countries in Africa have been
supportive of the Efforts of Ethiopia and
the AU to restore order in Somalia. Most
countries feel that the US however is taking
advantage of anarchy in Somalia to further
its own goals in combatting terror.
The idea that the US is jumping on the
bandwagon of an African Problem solved by
Africans does has some merit. Remember how
the US and the Soviet Union used Africa as a
proxy battlefied during the Cold War? So
some of our prior bad acts could be coming
home to roost. And the USA has noone to
blame but itself or so the Africans think.
